Education is not the learning of facts,
but the training of the mind to think.

My Educational Philosophy
I believe that education is a highly valued asset in one’s life. The educational journey helps the youth of America strive for excellence. It is a teacher‘s responsibility to be a facilitator and a guide on that journey. As a teacher, I believe that my role is to keep students motivated and encouraged about reaching their goals and desires. I know from my own experiences that students will need, but not always want, my guidance and it is my job to make myself available to them. As a teacher, I must help students to understand the importance of education in their lives. It is my job to open their eyes to the benefits and rewards of education.
I firmly believe that helping and joining the community will demonstrate how much I care and help to build lasting relationships in and out of the classroom. Creating appropriate relationships with students and parents can inspire and motivate a community. When students trust that the teacher is on their side, the sky is the limit for their success. While teaching, I have learned that being a part of the community lets students know how much you care. That type of trust and caring is what students will remember most about their journey and they will use that as a tool for achievement.
Teachers must set goals for themselves and for their students in order to have something tangible to reach. Goal-setting helps students and teachers measure achievement. I have set goals for myself to keep students involved and motivated to personalize their education and take ownership of it. I achieve these goals by using differentiated instruction and giving multiple opportunities for student achievement in the classroom. The use of technology opens the forum for assessment and gives the student a greater ability to personalize his or her own education and take ownership of it. Encouraging extra-curricular activities is another method I use to foster learning outside of the classroom. The ability for students to get involved in programs and teams that interest them is another way for them to own their own journey. I believe that the students must also set goals for themselves and I believe that it is my job to help students create individual goals to give them something tangible to strive for.
Engaging activities are one way to keep students motivated to reach their goals. I have learned that there are many ways to keep a student involved during their learning experience. Group activities, individual investigation and outside projects are excellent ways to engage learners. Teachers must also understand that all students learn in different ways. I believe that learning can be fostered and enhanced by using all of the tools in the proverbial toolbox. Using a variety of teaching methods and differentiating lessons will help to reach each student in the classroom. I believe that keeping students involved in various learning activities is the best approach to enhance student education.
In order to create a comfortable and appropriate learning environment a teacher must have good classroom management. I believe that teachers must have clearly defined rules and consequences made available to students. Teachers should maintain a positive and appropriate relationship with the students at all times. Effective teachers are able to efficiently guide students back to the path of learning when they begin stray away. Positive reinforcement and encouragement are two key elements to effectively inhibiting unproductive behavior in the classroom. Therefore I believe teachers must remain positive and encouraging. I believe a teacher that sets goals, builds positive and appropriate relationships, becomes actively engaged in the community, and manages the classroom will motivate students to reach goals and own their education. The student may not remember everything the teacher taught him, but he will remember how the teacher treated him and motivated him. I firmly believe that education changes lives and I am willing and able to do everything in my power to ensure my students succeed in their journey, achieve their goals, and contribute to the future of our ever-changing world.
